Zinc Lozenges Can Cut The Duration Of Cold Symptoms In Half

A study showing that Zinc lozenges can cut the duration of cold symptoms in half was published in the Annals of Internal Medicine.

The randomized, double-blind, placebo study, conducted at the Detroit Medical Center in Michigan and published in Annals of Internal Medicine, tested zinc lozenges containing 12.8 mg of zinc against a placebo. 25 cold sufferers were treated with the zinc lozenges, 23 received placebo lozenges. The results were:

  • The zinc lozenges group had a shorter average duration of cold symptoms. Average for the zinc lozenges group was 4.5 days - the placebo group's colds lasted 8.1 days on average.
  • Duration of coughs was reduced from 6.3 days for the placebo group to 3.1 days for those using zinc lozenges.
  • Duration of nasal discharge was 5.8 days for the placebo group, 4.1 days for those using zinc lozenges.
  • Severity of all of these symptoms was reduced for those using zinc lozenges.

"Administration of zinc lozenges was associated with reduced duration and severity of cold symptoms, especially cough," state the authors of the study headed by A.S. Prasad of Wayne State University.

Quantum, Inc. distributes a variety of zinc lozenges - Orange, Cherry and Lemon Cold Season Plus+ lozenges, Zinc Echinacea Lozenges, and Zinc Echinacea Hard Candy Drops.

"We expect this study to kick-start our Cold Season sales," says Quantum president Eve McClure. "Our lozenges contain 14 mg of zinc - the same form and dosage of zinc used in the study."

"Research drives sales in the Natural Products Industry," says Quantum Director of Research Bruce Schennum. "Why suffer with a cold for over a week, when you can get rid of it in 4 days with Quantum's zinc lozenges?"
